Why is it important to reduce language barriers? How can we help families?

Can reducing language barriers help provide affordable, high quality childcare for low income families? I taught head start for only 2 years and I found out that many of my students were Hispanic and they didn’t speak English. I had an interpreter (on call) and I found it very difficult to communicate with my families and children. Throughout the years the U.S. population is constantly increasing and the number of non – English speakers have doubled. I want to make a stronger relationship for the teachers, families and children. If I were to open a center that offered English courses for the non-English speaking parents, I think this would open many opportunities to affordable childcare, jobs and more. By offering effective resources to parents they can understand
education options if they became dual language learners, understand eligibility and enrollment
process, would not be in the less common group cultural and linguistic, open doors to professional
development.
If you have any advice or resources that would be beneficial please feel free to share them.

  1. Wow, what an awesome topic for discussion. I have noticed this in my elementary school too. In our school they have started a program called DLI (DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION). We have teachers who only speak Spanish to the students but they rotate between the Spanish classroom and the English classroom and I truly believe that this is such a great opportunity for English speakers and non English speakers. My other topic choice was lack of resources, this too is another big topic. teachers and parents constantly need strong support and good resources to help them better serve themselves and the children they take care of each day.good response

  2. Hello Iris,

I like how you would offer English courses to your children their families, and any co-workers that wants to learn English when you open your own childcare center. I think that it is a great idea. One suggestion I would make is offering Spanish courses as well. I know that I would be the first ones to sign up because I would love to learn their language so that I can both communicate the children and their families as well.
