Welcoming Families From Around the World

The name of “your” family’s country of origin
At least five ways in which you will prepare yourself to be culturally responsive towards this family
A brief statement describing in what ways you hope that these preparations will benefit both you and the family

Child Care-
Trinidad -- Africa
  • I will make them comfortable upon visit (welcome them in)
  • I will have a translator or use some form of communication device to understand
  • I will ask them questions about childcare and give them a understanding of the cost and all the resources we offer
  • I will ask them to volunteer at the school to get a better understanding of how we organize and implement rules and regulations
  • I will give them information of resources in their surrounding neighborhood
  • I will offer trust and a family-professional relationship
I think by implementing these things this will make their experience a lot smoother. If a person feels welcomed they will be more open to understanding and they will take their guard down.

  1. Iris,
I like the idea of giving the family resources that are available in the area so that they feel more comfortable. I also like that you extended a relationship of trust with the family. Being new to an area, it can often be complicated to get adjusted and learn new surroundings. Having someone to trust in and that will offer the best advice and recommendations will put their mind at ease.

  2. Hello Iris,
You listed some very good ideas. You suggested binging in a interpreter and this is indeed a great idea. While I consider being in this type of situation I become very nervous because living in a small very rural community finding a translator outside of the family's circle may be difficult. Just as you did however, with adequate time to research and prepare for the needs of the child and the family, it could definetly be accomplished. I also like how you included the family and resources that extended beyond the facility, this can show that you are truly concerned about the child and their family.
